Chapter One will donate proceeds to Joplin

Chapter One: the modern local, a restaurant in the Artists Village, is hosting a charity event tonight, Wednesday, with all proceeds to be donated to the Red Cross to help victims of last month’s tornado in Joplin, Mo.

A tornado moving at speeds of greater than 200 mph struck Joplin on May 22, resulting in more than 150 fatalities and 1,000 injuries.

Chapter One will offer special prix-fixe menus with wine pairings as well as its full menu for tonight’s event.

The $60 menu for two will include a grilled octopus appetizer, caesar wedge salad, seared duck breast with a compote reduction, and “Whiskey & Coke” dessert — a black pepper sponge cake with whiskey ice cream and coke foam.

The $120 menu for two will feature a blood orange seared ahi salad, 20 oz. porterhouse steak, and soft chocolate ganache. This menu will include a bottle of Trapiche Malbec which normally sells for $90.

Individual menu pricing is also available at $30 or $60 with wine pairings to match.

The restaurant staff is working on a signature drink, which co-owner Jeff Hall describes as a spherical deconstructed sangria with fruit caviar, to offer during tonight’s event.

The staff has agreed to donate their time and tips to the cause.

A few of the new summer menu items that will not be regularly available until early July will also be featured on tonight’s menu.  The menu is subject to change depending on freshness of ingredients and what is locally available, according to Hall.

Reservations can be made online at  chapteronetml.com. The event runs from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Chapter One is at 227 N. Broadway.
